The crowd went wild when the emcee announced 23-year-old university student Siti Nadhirah Meow as winner of the first prize, which consisted of a three-day, two-night stay at Pangkor Laut Resort worth RM5,000 and a Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro smartphone sponsored by YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.

The second prize – a three-day, two-night stay at the same luxury resort and a Samsung Galaxy A7 smartphone also sponsored by YTL Communications – went to logistics executive Royani Abdul Rahman, 36, while remisier Jannatunna’im Sabdin, 46, went home with a 43-inch Singer LED television set sponsored by Sports Toto.

To commemorate Colonel Chapman’s escape, the Chapman Challenge, a run-swim event, is held on Pangkor Laut, now a 300-acre private resort paradise. The race includes 3.8 kilometers of road, 2.4 kilometers of technical trail that winds through and over a two million-year-old rainforest, and finally ends at Emerald Bay, where competitors then swim 1K and run 30 meters to the finish line at Chapman’s Bar—named after Freddy Chapman, who was decorated as a colonel after the war.

Retreat to a private universe at YTL's Pangkor Laut Resort in Malaysia

Pangkor Laut Resort was the favoured retreat of the late opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, who officially opened the resort in 1994. Upon staying there for the first time he said: "This place is a paradise … when I woke up I went out and was really moved … to see what beautiful things God had done."

While his reflections on nature hardly match his famous tenor, I see his point: Pangkor Laut may be a mere 120 hectares in size, but it teems with the sort of flora and fauna you'd otherwise see only deep within an equatorial rainforest. Oriental hornbills – with their distinctive toucan-like beaks – dart between the ancient trees, colourful butterflies flutter about at eye level, fruit bats sleep upside down, and a tiny black-tip reef shark darts between the coral off the rock on which I stand.
